Gutter Health 101:

As a roofing contractor in Tacoma, we know the last thing you probably want to do on your days off is clean your gutters, but it is an imperative part of home ownership. So many different problems can transpire from a gutter clog, so do not hesitate or you could be faced with damages that need costly repairs. When water is unable to properly redirect away from your home, it can cause serious problems for your roof, fascia, soffit, and foundation. There are several reasons to be proactive with gutter maintenance and here are four we think you should consider.

Roof Damage

"If your gutters are clogged and there is water spilling over and splashing back onto your roof, it can cause the roofing materials and the decking beneath them to rot and cause structural weakening, says an expert for roof repair in Tacoma".

Damage to Fascia Boards

The boards that your gutters are attached to are defined as fascia. Standing water from poor drainage can really hurt this essential component that is accountable for supporting the weight of your gutters. Too much pressure from the weight of the water can shred your gutters right off of your home and often damaging other parts of your home like the siding, landscaping, sidewalks, etc.

Cracks in the Foundation

When water is spilling over from your gutters and pools up against the foundation of your home it will expand when the temperatures drop below freezing and generate cracks. A crack that is going horizontally is typically the most serious because it is usually indicating serious structural damage.

Ice Damming

If you noticed an abnormal amount of snow or ice building up on the edges of your gutters and roof or large icicle formations on the eves then you have ice dams which spell trouble. When water is unable to drain properly, it will freeze to your gutter and form what's called an ice dam. When an ice dam is left unattended to, it can rip a gutter off completely, saturate your shingles and the sheathing underneath, and end up leaking water into your home.
